Hotmail and most other sites store the passwords as cookies. If
you've got your Internet security settings set to erase cookies when
you close the browser (usually for privacy/paranoia reasons), they'll
be gone. Either disable that feature, set it to erase only session
expired cookies, or use a password manager (Firefox has one built in,
I'm not sure about IE).
Keep in mind that doing so will defeat some of the purpose behind
having the browser clear all your private information at the end of a
session.
Erm.... I don't think you don't have to go that far. It's been a
while since I used IE, but I think if that's the problem it should
really only happen on the *high* setting for most sites, as it should
allow permanent cookies on that setting.
The medium setting only clears session cookies (temporary ones which
only store information that you use for that session). The ones with
a longer expiry date (the hotmail one should be like that) should be
left alone. The only other cookies it has a problem with on that
setting are third party cookies, but that's usually just cookies used
for ads which are sent by a machine other than the one you're
connecting to.
If not, you should see options on IE's privacy settings to allow you
to specify privacy settings for individual sites (ie. allow exemptions
to the privacy settings for specified sites).
I'm thinking that it might be something else erasing your cookies.
Do you have additional internet privacy software running that might be
doing that when you exit the browser?
Do you have the windows policies specifically set to do it when you
shut down or log off? (If the answer is something like "I dunno" and
you're the one handling the technical details of this machine, then
the answer's no).
