Hotfix KB912919 is dangerous!!

A

Anthony Capon

Hi
Just thought you ought to know I'v spent a day and a half troubleshooting my
home network which suddenly went down. Internet access was limted to the
browser, any program that wanted internet access was blocked!! Email stopped
working ... it just couldn't find the servers!!! My fire wall was behaving
strange (NIS 2005).....

Any way to cut a long story very short... eventually I traced it to Hotfix
KB912919!!!! I uninstalled it and hey presto!!! Everything went back to
normal! Now this is slated as a "critical fix" so what's going on here guys?
This fix is supposed to fix the WMF vulnerability problem not take down your
system!!!!

Regards
Anthony

Sorry in advance for the lack of knowledge..How is one to know to disable
firewall + antivirus when you receive update via window auto update?

M

Mike Hall \(MS-MVP\)

You don't, but please let it be noted that once again, a Norton product is
at the centre of something not working the way it should..

Best advice to you and anybody.. dump Norton, and look for something less
problematic..

I took your advice and uninstalled this hotfix but still my e-mail couldn't
connect to the server. I traced it to the Norton Firewall which when turned
off solves the problem. Reinstalled the hotfix and still it's the firewall so
it has maybe done something permanent to it by the look of things and so far
I've yet to find out how to change it back as O/E is being "allowed" in the
programmes - weird!!

This is a known problem with NIS & NPF.

Some have posted that /something/ on this Symantec page fixed it (Disabling
then re-enabling Protection?):
http://service1.symantec.com/Support/nip.nsf/docid/2005083015103436

Some have posted that simply disabling and re-enabling the firewall fixed
it.

YMMV.

General OE Caveats:

- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Disable Background Compacting [N/A in SP2] and frequently perform a manual
compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at
http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm.

- Do not attempt to close OE via Task Manager or shutdown your machine if
Automatic Compacting is taking place (WinXP SP2 only).

- Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause
corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection.

Thanks all for continued help.
I have tried disabling and re-enabling the AV & Firewall but it doesn't help
unless the Firewall is turned off completely whereby everything is working OK.
I've looked in the Symantec support page and under Advanced/General I can't
see that any of the blocked programmes are related to O/E but I'm not
sufficiently experienced to be able to determine them unless they are
blatantly obvious, which they're not.
If I turn off both the incoming and outgoing e-mail scanning facility, I can
receive but not send e-mails.
Seems like the whole issue lies with the Firewall and returning it to
"default" solves the problem but as soon as "Live Update" does it's bit, then
all is lost again.
I'm tearing my hair out now!!!

Hi
Just a quick note that the Norton Fire wall seemed to be configured
correctly, the programs appeared to have the right permissions etc etc. The
problem is deeper than that I think.

The web-page Norton sent didn't help so this is the solution he sent me to
solve the problem, hope someone else can copy and paste the details instead
if they need them:-

In most cases, this issue can be resolved by deleting the Outlook Express
(OE) entry in Norton Personal Firewall (NPF), restarting the computer and
then opening OE. I suggest that you follow the steps provided below:
Open Norton Internet Security.
In the main program window, double-click Personal Firewall.
On the Programs tab, make sure that Turn on Automatic Program Control is
checked.
Click the first item in the Manual Program Control list.
Scroll down for the entry "Microsoft Outlook Express " and select the rule.
Click Remove.
If you see a warning message, click Yes to remove the rule.
Click OK to close the Program Control window.
Restart the computer.
Open your OE and check if the issue persists.

If the issue persists, this issue can be easily resolved by creating a
Firewall rule for Ports 25 and 110 by following the steps provided below:

1. Open NIS 2005 and Click on Personal Firewall and then click on configure.
2. Click on Advanced Tab and then click on General button.
3. Click on Add button at the bottom.
4. Click on Permit and then click on Next.
5. Select the third option, “Connection to and from other computersâ€, and
then click on Next.
6. Select Any Computer and then click on Next.
7. Permit the protocols TCP and UDP and then select “Only the types of
communication or ports listed belowâ€, and then click on Add button.
8. Select Filter by “Known Ports from the list†and then check Port# 25 and
110 from the list below. Click on Next.
9. Then click next twice.
10. Click on Check All and then click on Next.
11. Click on Finish, click on OK and then click on OK again.
12. Close the Integrator Window and try accessing Internet.

THE SECOND SET OF RULES WORKED FOR ME, AFTER REMOVING O/E FROM THE FIREWALL
LIST.

Just thought you ought to know I'v spent a day and a half
troubleshooting my home network which suddenly went down.
Internet access was limted to the browser, any program that
wanted internet access was blocked!! Email stopped working ...
it just couldn't find the servers!!! My fire wall was behaving
strange (NIS 2005).....

Any way to cut a long story very short... eventually I traced
it to Hotfix KB912919!!!! I uninstalled it and hey presto!!!
Everything went back to normal! Now this is slated as a

supposed to fix the WMF vulnerability problem not take down

Thanks for this!
The web-page Norton sent didn't help so this is the solution he sent me to
solve the problem, hope someone else can copy and paste the details
instead
if they need them:-

In most cases, this issue can be resolved by deleting the Outlook Express
(OE) entry in Norton Personal Firewall (NPF), restarting the computer and
then opening OE. I suggest that you follow the steps provided below:
Open Norton Internet Security.
In the main program window, double-click Personal Firewall.
On the Programs tab, make sure that Turn on Automatic Program Control is
checked.
Click the first item in the Manual Program Control list.
Scroll down for the entry "Microsoft Outlook Express " and select the
rule.

1. Open NIS 2005 and Click on Personal Firewall and then click on
configure.
2. Click on Advanced Tab and then click on General button.
3. Click on Add button at the bottom.
4. Click on Permit and then click on Next.
5. Select the third option, â?oConnection to and from other computersâ?,
and then click on Next.
6. Select Any Computer and then click on Next.
7. Permit the protocols TCP and UDP and then select â?oOnly the types of
communication or ports listed belowâ?, and then click on Add button.
8. Select Filter by â?oKnown Ports from the listâ? and then check Port#
25 and 110 from the list below. Click on Next.
9. Then click next twice.
10. Click on Check All and then click on Next.
11. Click on Finish, click on OK and then click on OK again.
12. Close the Integrator Window and try accessing Internet.

THE SECOND SET OF RULES WORKED FOR ME, AFTER REMOVING O/E FROM THE
FIREWALL LIST.

Are there any web-pages (e.g.,
http://service1.symantec.com/Support/nip.nsf/docid/2005083015103436)
addressing this that you can post here for others, Skye?

Thanks to everyone who helped!!
I e-mailed Norton and they sent me explicit instructions how to
correct the problem, too long and detailed to post here but if anyone
does need help then I can always copy and paste them for you. It's
now all working fine, that's until Norton updates itself again then
we shall see what happens.
Watch this space!!

To be on the safe side: please e-mail Symantec Support
Instructions vary with Versions 2004 2005 2006

Configuring firewall rules for Web-enabled programs

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...ew=docid&dtype=&prod=&ver=&osv=&osv_lvl=&seg=

To unblock programs manually
To reset some or all of the firewall rules, follow the steps in
Configuring firewall rules for Web-enabled programs.
Document ID:2005083015103436
Last Modified:10/27/2005

and it goes on..but once you do it, it is not too hard, it is
finding the info, that's why I just e-mail support.

You guys are Brutal; just because I am using 2004 cuz I could never
get NIS + NSW 2005 to WORK!

Thanks,

:

Thanks all for continued help.
I have tried disabling and re-enabling the AV & Firewall but it
doesn't help unless the Firewall is turned off completely whereby
everything is working OK. I've looked in the Symantec support page
and under Advanced/General I can't see that any of the blocked
programmes are related to O/E but I'm not sufficiently
experienced to be able to determine them unless they are
blatantly obvious, which they're not.
If I turn off both the incoming and outgoing e-mail scanning
facility, I can receive but not send e-mails.
Seems like the whole issue lies with the Firewall and returning
it to "default" solves the problem but as soon as "Live Update"
does it's bit, then all is lost again.
I'm tearing my hair out now!!!

:

This is a known problem with NIS & NPF.

Some have posted that /something/ on this Symantec page fixed it
(Disabling then re-enabling Protection?):
http://service1.symantec.com/Support/nip.nsf/docid/2005083015103436

Some have posted that simply disabling and re-enabling the
firewall fixed it.

YMMV.

General OE Caveats:

- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them
to local folders created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Disable Background Compacting [N/A in SP2] and frequently
perform a manual compact of all OE folders while "working
offline". More at http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm.

- Do not attempt to close OE via Task Manager or shutdown your
machine if Automatic Compacting is taking place (WinXP SP2
only).

- Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also
cause corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional
protection. --

Configure Automatic Updates to download automatically but ask for your
permission to install updates.

How to configure and use Automatic Updates in Windows XP:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=306525

OR...

Get rid of all Norton apps.

I have a simpler solution. Unless someone can recommend a
FREE better hard drive manager than Norton 2003,

I have been using Norton System Works 2003 since it came
out, and I like it a lot. It's the best hard drive manager I
know of in one can.

What I found totally inadequate was the AV, so I disable
that when I load the rest. You can actually only load PART
of Norton.

I load everything BUT the AV, and for my AV, I use AVAST and
AVG.

Works beautifully!

I have a major hard drive manager/maintenance program that
finds and fixes HUNDREDS of issues daily.

And I have 1st class virus protection.

No one said you have to "have it all in one package."

I've had MAJOR negative feedback about Norton 2004 and
Norton 2005, which is why I said

Norton 200 3

And as far as I know, "Go Back" isn't on 2004 or 2005.

I use Norton Go Back 2003 as well, and it has saved my bacon
more times than I can count.

Go Back IS on NSW 2005. As I mentioned is previous post, I could NOT get
2005 products to work together with SP2. I am still using NIS + NSW 2004 but
have NOT loaded Go Back. I am afraid of it at this point, although it has
saved me a number of times! 2004 products used to work GOOD for me until
WinXP SP 2.
But I gotta go with Bill's stuff!!
