HOT CPU

D

Don

My motherboard is A7N8X deluxe (Rev 1.04) and my CPU is the 2800+Barton, and
I have been running since March 03. I have a power supply with 2 fans, two
case fans and the stock AMD CPU cooler.

Yesterday with a ambient temp about 75-80 while encoding a movie, my machine
just shut down. This happened about three times At first I thought it was
virus activity, but my machine did not reboot, just shut down. I opened
ASUS probe and the CPU temp was 68 c and the threshold was 70 c, so I raised
the threshold to 75 c and again with intense activity, my machine shut down
again and again.

Next, I went to my bios and the temperature there was 10 degrees higher that
the temp shown in ASUS probe.

I haven't done any intense activity since then as I don't want to harm my
CPU, but I am wondering if this 10 degree temp difference is "normal" or is
this something to be fixed? I never noticed it before but then it wasn't
important then. AMD shows my CPU as having a max temp of 85 c.

Has anyone had this same experience and cured it? Should I opt for a
better cooler or redo the thermal paste or what?

BTW, I do use a McAfee firewall and all my ports are closed so I don't think
I have that last virus and I am patched for it.

Thank you,

Ambient is 75-80f? CPU @ 70c is too hot.

Read up about correct heatsink mounting and applying thermal gunk at the
arctic silver site. Once you are clear on what to do and what not to do,
follow the procedure. I would keep the system turned off - if you can until
you are ready. Persistent running at such a high temp is not a good idea and
may damage components.

A temp differential is normal in some situations as some readers check the
CPU core temp via a thermal diode in the CPU, others check the external temp
so are prone to being much lower.

Thanks for the advice and info, Tim. Could you give me the URL of the arctic
silver site?
I don't know how AMD and ASUS check the temps. I would assume the bios
checks from whatever is built into the motherboard, but I have no idea how
ASUS probe does it.
Right now, without doing anything intensive, ASUS probe reports the CPU temp
as 57 degrees c. Of course I'm not doing anything but visiting the
newsgroup.

Check the HS for dirt and crud, also, clean the fan blades off. Dirt
is an enemy of cooling.

Argh, thats boiling. Google for AIDA32, download and run it, then go to
computer -> sensors. That will tell you the socket and diode temperatures.
Prepare to be shocked by the diode temperature......

Well, Phil, I did what you suggested. I Googled for AIDA32 and it now has a
successor called "Everest Home Edition." I downloaded it, ran it, and now I
am really confused. My MB temp is 56 c, my CPU temp is 38 c and the CPU
diode temp is 74 c. The opposite of the other reports. Who do I believe
now? Why would my MB be hotter than my CPU? I assume the CPU diode is
located under the CPU, but what senses the CPU itself? Also where would the
MB sensor be?
Please excuse my naivete and tell me how I can educate myself on these temps
and sensors so I can get my machine running right.
Thanks

As soon as I know what I'm doing, I'll open the case and do what you
suggested. Thanks.

What you SHOULD be doing is STOP using this machine till you get the cooling
issues resolved . You are cooking the cpu into oblivion.

Hey there,
I actually had similar problems, although not quite as severe. Here's the
info for you:

- Asus A7N8X-E Mobo
- AMD 3200+ Barton
- 1 gb Corsair 2.0 DualChannel XMS RAM
- SilentMaxx Big Tower
- SilentMaxx 400W Pwr. supply
- GForce 4 Ti 4200 128mB
- Hitachi 164 gb SATA HD
- LiteOn 4x DVD burner
- misc other stuff....

the main focus was on quietness of the system. The case is well isolated
from the inside. Lot's of hd-foam mats it it, great to terminate vibrations,
thus sound. The problem, bad airflow and lot's of heat to build up.

To cut it down, we tested every item the shop had to offer, as my system was
silent - but running at 62° - 65° CPU temp at idle. After trying numerous
fans and heatsinks this is what we came up with:

-Zalman heat sink. (The big, big one - 790 grams ;)
-Papst Fan 300rpm, heat reg.
-ArticIce3 conbuctive paste

The heatsink is on the cpu, of course. The fan is directly next to the cpu
heatsink, sucking hot air from the case, exhausting it to outside.

If the case is closed, it's very quiet. Temperature will idle at 50° to 51°
C. Full DVD conversion will push it in to the low 60's at most. Mobo temp is
around 40°C.

The Mobo you are using is not really giving back proper vaules for it's
temp. Even AsusProbe will not function all that well... (???) As far as I
know the mobo will return two true values: cpu temp & mobo temp.

Oh, and check if you've used good and enough conductive paste. (But not too
much...)

hope this has help a bit,

Andy

Just read your post once more and came up with one more thing:

Get rid of that stock cooler.

Sorry, didn't know it had been replaced, I'll have to look in to the newer
program myself.
As several other people have said, stop using the machine, you'll damage the
processor severely!
Did you install the HSF correctly, and what sort of case/case fans do you
have?

Check out:

http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/TechnicalResources/0,,30_182_869_4348^6678,00.html

for help with the HSF, don't listen to the people saying ditch the retail
HS, I have it and it runs fine, the max temp ever recorded was 48 for the
CPU, and that was really stressing it. Normally it maxes out at about 30 on
the mobo, 38-44 CPU.

Definately sounds like the readings have been reversed....one more program
would be MBM5 (MotherBoard Monitor).

If I were you I would take the HSF off, get some new TIM, and do exactly as
the AMD site says to, then come back and post on how you got on.

That's way too hot. What sort of CPU heatsink/fan are you using, and was it
installed correctly? Also, what about the other aspects of your cooling
system? Have you checked all of these (case/PS fans, etc.) to ensure that
everything is still operating, the fans are blowing the correct direction(s),
the filters aren't clogged with guck, etc.?

I want to thank all of you who answered my call for help.
Yesterday I bought a new cooler, "Silent Boost" from Thermaltake
(www.thermaltake.com), and installed it today. When I removed my old AMD
cooler, the thermal paste was very dry and crumbled right off. I couldn't
tell if it was installed properly or not.

I am now running a steady 44-45 degrees C and the report from ASUS probe is
within 2-3 degrees of the Bios report. This is about twenty+ degrees cooler
than before.

My case was very dusty inside so now I know I have to clean it more than
once a year. I haven't done any CPU intense work yet but I'm confident that
my machine can now handle a considerable rise in temperature and still be
below the danger zone.

All of you that replied gave me some positive feedback and I really
appreciate it

Thanks

.
What is the best way to clean the inside of the case? I always worry
that the canned air will "disturb" something.
