Hot Athlon

J

JnJ

A computer working happily for a year now shows the CPU temp at 70
degrees and the case at 38 usinf Motherboard Monitor and Aida. To date
the heatsink and fan (Zalman) have been refitted and an extra case fan
added but to no significanteffect.

The CPU (Athlon XP A 2200) shows 70 degrees immediately after boot-up.
Is it possible for processors themselves to start running hot like this?

Thanks for your replies.

My processor needs some time to get warm and it never get's this hot (BY
FAR). Could it be that the temperature-sensor is broken? I don't know
whether on modern Athlons this in integrated in the chip or whether it still
is measured by a probe on the mobo (I think this was a patents mather, Intel
had on-chip and Athlon couldn't because of the patent so temp was measured
by a probe underneath the processor, not sure about this though).
I would try to put the processor on another mobo and measure the temperature
there.

Good luck,
Rene

Thanks Rene,

Will try some swapping around with another Mobo/PC.

The hottest my Athlon XP ever gets is 52 degrees. And it's overclocked.

When you refitted your Athlon did you check the thermal paste and put
a new layer on? I assume you did but might as well ask the obvious.

Im using an Athlon 1 gig since I cant use my new system now ----- and
that I noticed was shooting up in temps. I hadnt touched it in ages
so I took the heatsink off and put a new layer of paste and its way
down again like it usually is.

Absolutely - re-seated, re-pasted. I suspect the readings but will
report back when I have time to swap a few things around. After all,
this is with a Zalman flower heatsink and the fan turned up, an extra
case fan etc!

The temperature shows 70 degrees immediately on boot-up and doesn't vary
with light or heavy usage. The PC has so much cooling at present that
this starting temperature is not credible. Motherboard Monitor does not
support this (MSI) mobo so, all in all, Rene was right to suspect the
readings/sensor. Finally the heat-sink is hardly warm to the touch.
Seems like I have no problem!

Thanks all for help, especially Rene.

A blushing Rene says that You're welcome!
