Hosts files/list; how important?

For online shopping the subject can be a real pain; are they really worth

Not sure what you mean. If you're referring to a modified hosts file to
block banner ads/malware/etc., and you're having problems with specific
sites when doing your shopping, you can remark out the entries with a #. I
personally like the hosts file from mvps.org because I hate ads. Your
mileage may vary.
 
I'm referring to the MVP extensive hosts file: the problem is that one can
not always isolate the entry that is causing a certain web site to be blocked.

Then you could stop using it if you wish....or figure out what domains it's
trying to contact. That isn't usually that hard (check your "back" button
contents).
