It may be important and it may not be but I think I should tell those that
keep the hosts file for MVPS my problem using their file. What's the best
way?? describe it here or send it somewhere (address unknown). I now have a
hosts file several times larger that does not hinder operating programs in
the background.
thanks

Hi,
Post the problem to this newsgroup. Someone (probably not me) should be able
to help.

Right
I have a pentium 3 -531MHz-256 RAM
without a host everything works fine

With the MVP host when I put a real time data program in the background a
attempt to open CNN or Seattle times both will not come up (they appear to
freeze) there are a few others but many sites will come up.

! got another host file (734KB) installed and EVERYTHING works fine . With
the data program in the background all other sites come up

I wrestled with my problem for a long while. Looked at Security, privacy,RAM
etc before I stumbled on to my current configuration. NOW I suspect the MVP
hosts file has something in it that causes the problem. BUT of course I am
not the smartest dog in this pack

Your post has been forwared to the HOSTS file's owner. I hope that you have
used your real email address.

SF Gordon,
With the MVP host when I put a real time data program in the background"
What "data program"? Does this only occur only when using that program?

I can access CNN and the Seattle Times site with no problem. (using my HOSTS
file)

Shoot At the suggestion of someone in this network I fixed my email to avoid
problems. They indicated if I made it fairly obvious people who wanted to
email me could figure it out. In this case excel can be forgotten/

Tried the new hosts release and got some change but still have the problem.
Now CNN comes fully up on the screen but freezes and is inoperable. Seattle
times still will not complete and come on the screen

Gord, what happens if you're /not/ running eSignal

running Mike's HOSTS file? Might the eSignal freeware be the problem?

SF Gordon,
It's not a memory issue ... it's eSignal running you thru a "tracker" that's
listed in my HOSTS file that doesn't exist on the other HOSTS file that you
are now using.

If you read the (very scary!) "Privacy Policy" from eSignal you'll see what
I'm saying about the "tracking". That's what happens when you use "freeware"
you give up your privacy in exchange for free stuff, rather that purchasing.

<quote>
While accessing and operating an eSignal product, the eSignal software will
record general statistical and tracking information

And I love this one! ...

Thank you for a good diagnosis. Now what to do about it beyond finger
pointing. Let me correct you on one assumption, Esignal is NOT free and is
considered by many as one of the top programs in the business. Hope you have
the right esignal. I believe they would like to know about this. Is there a
way to get them with you or are you out of it now???

http://www.esignal.com/esignal/, right?

IMHO there are a lot of loopholes in
http://www.esignal.com/disclaimer/default.asp, Gordon, but using it is up to
you. (Lord knows MSN and AOL have similar loopholes.) If you feel
comfortable with it, go ahead and use it with Ad Hosts instead of Mike's
file. He's merely informing you that eSignal *does* "track" you (and your
use of the application) via a third-party website listed in his HOSTS file.
"Informed consent" and all that, get it?

Everyone knows SUVs are more rollover-prone than sedans but millions still
buy and drive 'em (even with Firestone tires <eg>).

Guess I'm just trying to say, "Don't kill the messenger," because I feel
kind of responsible for having pointed you to Mike's pages (most of which
you'll admit have been helpful to you).
