Hosts file ignored!

I'll start with the basics. I'm running XP Home SP2 and IE6.0.

I recently learned of the benefits of amending my hosts file, and as such,
have started to put some entries in. Problem is, they're being ignored. I
initially put in some 127.0.0.1 entries for advertising sites, then checked
if they were working, and they weren't.

So i put in the following entry: 216.239.39.99 yahoo.com

Which should load up Google every time i try to open yahoo.com, right? But
it doesn't work. The status bar at the bottom of IE flashes up the
216.239.39.99 IP a few times, but Yahoo still loads.

I've cleared cache and everything, and i'm stuck for ideas.

Can anyone help?
