Hosting a website and ftp through a router

David

Hi All

I am running xp pro with all the latest updates. I am
trying to host my website and ftp but could not access it
through the outside. I have a router and have forward
ports 80 and 21. When I take of the router I can access
the ftp however not the website. Any ideas? I will like
to be able to access both through the router.

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Well, its possible your ISP is blocking TCP Port 80, ie. the port used by IIS, which will preclude
you from running a web site. Check with them for further details.

What router are you running? That information may help others help you...

Verizon does block port 80 in some, but not all, of it's territory.

Once you lick the technical issues (you can choose an alternate port, or,
for convenience, use a dynamic DNS service which can redirect the port for
you) you need to be VERY careful about security in such an arrangement.

Run Microsofts MBSA security analyzer tool, and fix EVERYTHING it recommends
with regards to IIS. This will include setting up logging and running the
lockdown tool and removing a bunch of directories that are not absolutely
essential.

I'm not experienced in trying to lock down FTP properly--I'd get advice on
this--open FTP servers are abused nearly instantaneously.
