Host File and PPTP VPN

My local host used to work when I connected to my VPN but now it does not.
If I attempt to ping a server by name that is in the host file, it works;
however, once I connect to my PPTP VPN, it does not work anymore and takes at
least 30 seconds for the WINS server to answer.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
 
which vpn software are you using? some vpn may block access the local LAN. For more and other information, go to http://howtonetworking.com.
