"Horizontal cursor"

I have a vertical cursor (I guess that's the insert point" ) but I'm also
seeing a horizontal line that moves along the bottom of the page as the text
fills the page. What is this and how can I get rid of it?

That's the end-of-document marker, and it always appears in Normal
view and Outline view. The only way to get rid of it is to work in one
of the other views.
