Hooking up a dos computer to win xp pc

I want to hook up a dos pc via a parallel cable. How do I
set it up in WinXP so I can data transfer between the two
machines. I hook up my parallel cable to the db25 printer
port which should be a parallel port as well and the
other end to my dos machine's parallel port and i get
nothing!

Where in WinXP can I tell it that that port is now a
parallel port and not a printer port.

Any help would be greatly appricated!
