"Hood's Best of Free Software Updated"

I counted 91 programs on the list.

The alphabetical list of programs is back by (popular?) demand.

Also there is a separate "Champions" list of the best-of-the-best.

"User guides and tips" is back. So is "Geek World."

I added a bunch of stuff to the "links" page too.

Let me know what you think.

Nice John.
I would not have the content all centered though.
I would align it to the left.
The page would look more easier on the eye then

Keep up the good work :)

???Only the titles sub titles, and links are centered, the reviews are
flush left. Should I flush left everything?

Why Tea

Can't believe there is no Windows Explorer replacement.

WxWikiServer as a replacement to Windows Sharepoint hardly accurate. To
be fair, Sharepoint as a document handler can do a lot more in terms of
security, access restrictions, automatic email distribution to selected
reviewers, etc. I think we should compare apple with apple, not orange
with grape fruit.

Uh, what of the several functions did you want to replace Explorer
with? The interface? The registry reader?

What specifically? Security and access restrictions are part of WX and
almost any wiki.
Wx doesn't have email distribution, but a little research would come up
with probably a
wiki out there that does, there are hundreds of wiki engines available,
all at no cost.

What WXwiki doesn't have is integration with MS products, but then
nothing else does either.
It also doesn't have the stability problems, security problems, and
administrative nightmares
that SharePoint has, AND it's cross-platform, AND it's browser
independant AND it doesn't cost.

But, don't believe me. I have a half dozen of my users and more than a
hundred of their volunteers who
are phasing out sharepoint for a wiki solution.

Download WX wiki and look at it. Then decide I'm wrong. If you do,
you're welcome to set up your own website.

A better than average freeware site.
Well done!

Somehow this didn't get posted so I'm trying again.

Sounds like you need to look more closely at wiki's. All but the last
can be done by WXwikiServer. The last one it can't do, but there is a
wiki engine that can, somewhere. There, literally hundreds of wiki
engines to choose from.

Wikis don't have and Sharepoint does, is integration with Microsoft
Office products. You can edit and publish from the local application.
Only microsoft products have that anyway. Wikis also lack the
instability, security holes, backend administrative hassles and license
cost of Sharepoint.

They do have, cross platform functionality, browser independance and
open structuring.

But, don't believe me, I have a handful of users, and their hundred-odd
volunteers who are dropping SharePoint for a wiki solution.

Just because an apple isn't a Grannysmith doesn't mean it's not an
apple. Look at what I'm showing you BEFORE you decide I'm wrong.

It's just a file manager...

In many cases, this is exactly what users want, especially with the
ubiquity of Word docs. Obviously MS didn't design with cross-platform
in mind. The model of operation is more of VPN as opposed of Web. I'm
not saying it's a good product. Both products are doing similar tasks
for different group of users. Hence the similarity of orange and
grapefruit, although both are citrus, but one can't replace the other
;)

Uh, no it really isn't. Explorer controls the look and feel of Windows,
manages the GUI, monitors the registry, shares duties with Task Manager
etc. If you want to try replacing it, good luck, but you won't have a
very functional system after that.

If you're looking for a file manager , I haven't found one that does a
better job, except Magellan Explorer and that's payware. That' why
there is none listed. If anyone knows of one, hell I'll take a look at it.

And you're basing that on what experience?

Users want to share information in a place that will control access, and
allow them to update and collaborate live, they could care less how, as
long as it's easy. Both wiki's and Sharepoint do this. No, wiki's
don't have direct editing of MS documents, but many do have a "Send as
email" feature that will allow you to post a page by emailing it to the
wiki, and you can edit a doc and repost it with the "Send" feature.

You're saying that wikis can't replace Sharepoint because there is no
direct editing like Sharepoint has. Yeah. They don't have MS Frontpage
MS Netmeeting or MS Exchange integration either. Big woop. If you move
out of Micro$oft land, there are other products that have different
features that achieve the same thing.

It seems like you're just buying the Microsoft party line - "Nothing is
better than Microsoft, so don't bother comparing other products."

As Duddits suggested, the Free Commander. I actually paid a little to
use the shareware Total Commander (http://www.ghisler.com). TotalCmd
only nags only once for those who are not willing to pay, but no
functionality is disabled. This is a total replacement for Windows
Explorer with VFS (ftp, http and sftp plugin), inbuilt packers, file
splitter/joiner/renamer, etc. Think of them as a superset of Windows
Explorer.

For those who come from the Unix world, the equivalent is Midnight
Commander.
It seems like you're just buying the Microsoft party line - "Nothing is

I think we can agree to disagree on this Sharepoint replacement. It can
go on forever. This is simialr to the comparison of Mambo to
Sharepoint.

I use SunOs/Solaris, Linux and MS at work. But all serious developments
are done on the SUN. I use Linux and MS at home, so I'm not a one-OS
user and I don't really "... buying the Microsoft party line". Every OS
has its strengths and weaknesses and every OS has its good applications
and utilities...

No. Not really. I actually do the serious work on Solaris. But I do use
Windows and Linux at home. I use what is suitable for the job. Let's
leave the Sharepoint/Wiki disagreement at that.
