Home vs. Professional edition?

What is the difference between XP Home and Professional editions? My new
laptop came with the Home edition, and I wonder if it is worth paying $$ to
upgrade to the Professional edition.

Thanks,

XP Pro has more business-oriented features, particularly networking. For
home use, you don't need to pay extra for Pro. There are some security
differences, but the only thing I've noticed in daily use is how folder
permissions can be set, for multiple users on one system, and for home
network access. Pro also allows more things with Remote Assistance- but for
home use, as I said, Home is fine.

Unless you are going to be working in an office environment, where
networking is required as well as enhance security features, you can live
without XP Pro. In fact, I know of several offices where XP Home Edition is
working just fine.

Can a XP Home machine become part of a domain and gain access to network
resources on a windows 2003 server? I don't want advanced features, but
basic stuff (accessing secured server directories, access to shared
printers, etc) is needed.

THanks

The answer to your first question is that NO, an XP Home system cannot join a
domain.

Having said that, it should be able to access resources on a Windows 2003
Server system, provided the resources have the proper security settings...
i.e.: Anyone and his mother can use them.

Once you mention Secured directories, the answer goes back to NO. Sorry!

For most people who have to ask, the answer is no, it's not worth
the extra cost.
XP Professional and XP Home are exactly the same in all respects,
except that Professional has a few features (mostly related to
networking and security) missing from Home. For most (but not
all) home users, these features aren't needed, would never be
used, and buying Professional instead of Home is a waste of
money.

For details go to

http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_home_pro.asp

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/whichxp.asp

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/howtobuy/choosing2.asp

Also note that Professional allows ten concurrent network
connections, and Home only five.

See http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_home_pro.asp
for the list of things that are in Pro only. In addition Pro will
support ten simultaneous connections in a network - Home only five

If you see no need for any of these Pro only matters, save money and
stick to Home - they are otherwise identical code

Only thing I can think likely is if you need to 'join' an office network
as a domain member
