I have the latest IE installed. I have always had MSN for
my home page. Suddenly this new home page pops up. It is:
res://mshp.dll/index.html#22776 I can not get rid of it.
I go to internet options and type in MSN. Then it will go
to it but if I leave and come back this other annoying
one is back. I have run a virus scan which says I am
clean, I have a firewall. My system is Windows XP. I have
rebooted, etc. I have tried checking go back to default
settings and it goes back but then the other comes back
AGAIN!! How can I get rid of this and get my home page
back?????

Thank you Ramesh. When I went to where you told me and
ran the CW shredder, it seems like I can get the home
page I want now. BUT that weird one is still my default
and I can't seem to change that. Any suggestion? Would I
run the shredder again. I have done ADAWARE and SPYBOT.

This is caused by a new spyware. Let's wait till a solution is found. You may post your Hijackthis logs to spyware info.com or send me a mail. [ramesh @ mvps.org] we will work on this.

Some ISP's provide a customised version of IE. Some Web pages will also
reset your home page and do this. One of the customisations they might make
is to disable the ability to change the home page, so that you are forced to
use their home page. You can re-enable this by making a small change in the
Windows registry.

In Regedit, navigate to this key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control
Panel

In the right-hand pane, right-click the "HomePage" value, then select
Modify. Change it to: 00 00 00 00

Also change either or these to zero 0 instead of 1 if present:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explo
rer] - DWORD "NoSetHomePage"=dword:00000001

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Restrictions] - DWORD "NoSetHomePage"=dword:00000001

If you don't have this key, browse to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main

and in the right hand pane, double click "Local Page" and set equal to
"C:\WINDOWS\System\blank.htm" (no quotes) which will hopefully set your Home
Page to blank and then allow you to subsequently modify it using Internet
Options.

Exit regedit and reboot.

When you reboot, you should be able to change the home page again.

Some pages will also download a program which keeps changing it back. Go to
Start | Run and type:
msconfig
and press <Enter> or click OK. Go to the Startup tab.
See if you can identify any suspicious programs. If you can, uncheck it, If
you can't, change the home page to what you want and then uncheck one and
then reboot. Try IE. If the Web page changed, change it back and then try
msconfig again, rechecking the last one and unchecking the next. Keep doing
this until you find the culprit.

bevmae,
Try this:

Hijacked Home Page res://mshp.dll/index.html#22776

Here is what I did to resolve the issue.

1. Go to your Windows folder and delete the file mshp.dll

2. Go to add/remove programs and see if a program called
iefeatsl is installed, if so remove it.

3. Click My Computer > Tools > Folder Options > View and then
click the bullet "Show hidden files and folders"

4. Double click your C: Drive and Navigate to the folder in
C:\Documents and Settings\[Your Username Here]\Application
Data\iefeatsl

5. Rename all the files in the iefeats1 folder and then delete the
iefeats1 folder and contents

6. Start regedit.
Start > Run > Regedit then select Edit > Find
{FD9BC004-8331-4457-B830-4759FF704C22}

It should be found in
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{FD9BC004-8331-4457-B830-4759FF704C22}]

If you expand the entry, it should look something like this:

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{FD9BC004-8331-4457-B830-4759FF704C22}]
@="SearchHookObject Class"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{FD9BC004-8331-4457-B830-4759FF704C22}\InprocServer32]
@="C:\\DOCUME~1\\[Your Username
Here]\\APPLIC~1\\iefeatsl\\msiesh.dll"
"ThreadingModel"="Apartment"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{FD9BC004-8331-4457-B830-4759FF704C22}\ProgID]
@="SearchHook.SearchHookObject.1"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{FD9BC004-8331-4457-B830-4759FF704C22}\Programmable]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{FD9BC004-8331-4457-B830-4759FF704C22}\TypeLib]
@="{2C671705-77A7-4592-A484-545087ED9EE8}"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{FD9BC004-8331-4457-B830-4759FF704C22}\VersionIndependentProgID]
@="SearchHook.SearchHookObject"

7. Delete the iefeatsl registry entry by highlighting
{FD9BC004-8331-4457-B830-4759FF704C22}
and pressing your delete key.

8. Exit regedit.

9. Set your home page back to what you want it to be.

Hope this helps,
D.D.
