Home Page and Search Problem

M

Mark

My browser has been taken over by a site called Lucky
Search. It appears as my Home Page and as the default
Search engine. I cannot customize the search window
anymore. I have found a 3rd party software package called
Xupiter on my machine. I deleted all folders associated
with it and disabled it in the "start up" tab using
the "msconfig" program. This seem to stop the Home Page
problem, but the Search problem persists. I have also
reloaded Internet Explorer 6.0 to no avail. I am running
Windows ME.

Any ideas on getting rid of "Lucky Search".

Xupiter browser hijacker:
http://217.115.153.73/parasite/Xupiter.html

Much easier to use these:
Get and update SpyBot Search and Destroy through its online update function.
http://tomcoyote.org/SPYBOT/

Ad-Aware is also a good "adware" remover.
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/

Get a good HOSTS file to stop theses nasties.
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

SpywareBlaster also stops these nasties.
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

Keep these things up to date as new nasties come along just like
viruses/worms.

Hi Mark,

SpyBot S&D searches your harddisk for Spyware and Adware
http://security.kolla.de/

&

Adaware (similar)
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/
(Remember to perform a Webupdate to have the latest definitions installed)

This will remove Xupiter from the PC. Next, reset the Search Engine.

Open Internet Explorer > Tools > Options > Programs > "Reset Web Settings"
Click the Search button in the toolbar > Customize > AutoSearch Settings >
Select a provider from the list.

Additionally, run Ad-Aware scan (www.lavasoftusa.com). Update it and run a
full system scan, eliminate the parasites causing this problem.

If this does not help, try deleting the following registry keys:

Open Registry Editor (regedit.exe) and goto this location:

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\Search Bar
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\Search Page
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\Start Page
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\Default_Page_URL
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\Default_Search_URL
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search\SearchAssistant
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search\CustomizeSearch
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\Search Bar

HKEY_CURRENT_USER (HKCU)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE (HKLM)

No No No.

That was only an indication what HKLM and HKCU means

HKCU (HKEY_CURRENT_USER)
HKLM (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE)

These keys should not be deleted. I think I 've put it in wrong way,
earlier.

thx for pointing out
