HI All,

I am trying to add a new desktop - running WinXP Home -
to an existing network. My goal is to make this new
machine the primary system on the network. (I'm replacing
an old, slow, machine.) To start, I need to add this
machine to the network and copy a large amount of data
from the old machine to the new. Then I need to work with
my High-speed ISP to get this new machine set up to
access the internet directly and remove the old machine
from the network all together.

The old machine is a Windows 98 machine. I also have a
WinXP Prof. Laptop accessing the network through a
wireless connection. (I can access the internet and files
on the Win98 machine from the laptop.)

I have been able to successfully add the new WinXP Home
machine to the network to access the internet. I cannot
see either of the other two machines from this computer,
however. I can see the new machine from the laptop, but I
can't map a network drive to it.

My online research has lead down a path indicating to me
that there is something missing...maybe a driver...on
this new XP Home machine. Why? Because I was instructed
to go to "My Computer/Tools/Folder Options/View" and make
sure "Use Simple File Sharing (Recommended)" was
selected, but I don't have that as an option in the list.
Its just not there. I think this explains why I can see
this new machine from the laptop but I can't map a drive.
I don't think it explains why this machine can't see any
of the other machines on the network.

Has anyone come across this issue before? Can anyone help
me resolve the problem?

Thanks,
Andrea

Greetings AGM,

Windows XP Home always uses simple file sharing. The "Use Simple File
Sharing (Recommended)" checkbox under the Folder Options is only available
in XP Pro. You will not see this option in XP Home.

When you find out, email me. I can't for the life of me, get XP to see computers running 98. 98 can see XP.

Thanks Eric.

I didn't see this reply earlier.

That said, Do you know why my Win 98 and Win XP Pro
machines can't "see" the Win XP Home machine? I have a
folder set up to share (the hand is there) on XP Home,
but when I go to map a drive to that folder, the XP Home
machine does appear in Network Neightborhood (Win98) or
equivalent for XP Pro.

I was able to connect the XP Home and Win 98 machines
using a Crossover connection, but I was only able to see
the XP Home machine from the Win 98 machine and not the
other way around.

Your help is appreciated!
Andrea

Make sure the XP's firewall is disabled. If you installed a third party
firewall such as ZoneAlarm, Sygate, or Norton Internet Security make sure it
is properly configured for the local area network. Ensure NetBIOS over
TCP/IP is enabled on all machines. Details here.

Enable NetBIOS Over TCP/IP (NetBT)
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/troubleshoot/netbt.htm

If that doesn't work, try testing the network and see if you can access the
other computers this way.

Click Start | Run, then type one of these commands in the box and click OK:

\\computer

\\computer\share

\\IP-address

\\IP-address\share
