Sean001

Can anyone help me with setting up a small home computer network using
windows xp. I will be connecting to the internet via a wired modem but would
like to be able to set up a wireless connection between the pc and laptop to
access the internet and share files and a printer.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

What you you mean "..via a wired modem...". All modems are wired, such as; Cable, DSL,
ISDN, DUN

Please elaborate...

In addition, do you understand the security ramifications of "War Driving" and not properly
securing a wireless network ?
 
I just setup wired network & found it best to:
1-buy hardware- see

2- get familiar with NAT,DCHP & other terms so u can
talk to:
3- router manufacturer TS-Call Between 0100-0600 ET.
2nd guy at DLink was really sharp & helpful. Took him
10min to get it right.

4 of my friends have at least an MS & NONE got router
to work without calling TS!

Any advise is my attempt to contribute more than I have received but I can only assure you that it works on my PC. GOOD LUCK.

Go to your friendly neighborhood computer shop and buy a combination
router/WAP (wireless access point). The combination is sometimes
called a wireless router. These things are all over the place these
days, they're not expensive. The instructions that come with it will
show you how to connect it (it connects to the cable modem or DSL
modem, at least one computer must be connected to it by a cable,
others will be able to connect wirelessly).

Once you get this set up, you'll be able to tell the computer that the
printer is attached to that the printer should be shared.
