Home networking problem: "not enough memory" error

B

Bruiser

I have my XP machine home networked to my Win98 one. Everything works fine
from the XP machine: I can access the other machine's files. However, even
tho' the Win98 machine can see the shared documents folder on the XP one,
when I try to open it I get: "...SharedDocs is not accessible. Not enough
memory. Close some programs."

I've tried disabling the firewall(s); I've checked to see if the necessary
services are running on XP (although I'm not sure if this is an XP issue or
not); I've enabled the Guest account. I don't know what else to check.

Any suggestions?

"Not enough
memory. Close some programs"

Bit of a giveaway, surely?
Have you tried closing all unnecessary programs?
How much memory is in the Win98 computer?

LOL! Clearly, if it were that simple, I wouldn't be asking for advice. The
Win98 machine has 384MB RAM, and this problem occurs right after startup
with a minimum of background apps running.

Well, you never know...
Have you run the XP wizard on the Win98 machine?

How have you set up virtual memory? Is windows managing it, or have you
set up your own scheme? If the latter, set up the former. You might
also from msconfig (start/run/type: msconfig) , select the System.ini
tab, open the 386Enh section, and increase the MinSPs by 4, i.e., from 4
to 8 to increase the number of stack pages available. I did this for
memory problems with Excel VBA. It might help here.

It's a longshot, these Win98SE memory messages are difficult to diagnose
even with the KB, and this might be a resources problem rather than
memory. Delete the contents of Windows/Temp, clean up temporary
internet files and check the box Delete Offline Content. If you have a
lot of icons on the desktop, bundle them up and store them somewhere
else. If you have more than about 50 files in the root of C, C:\, move
or delete them (files, not folders). Run a spyware program,
www.spybot.com or www.lavasoft.de . Scandisk to pick up any lost
clusters, etc. Defrag the HD (it does make a difference). I would also
look at exactly what is being loaded at startup with msconfig and even
though there might not be many, verify that they are actually necessary.
If you have the MS Office startup, OSA.exe, definitely remove it from
the startup apps. It's unnecessary and is a memory hog.

If there is no improvement, boot to safe mode, examine device manager
for duplicates (phantoms) of all devices. If any duplicates are found,
delete *all* of them and let the OS redetect them on the next boot. If
there are many, you might do this one at a time.

Good suggestion, but they are already things I have thought of and checked.
I don't use this machine much any more, so there's very little clutter, and
it had always been well maintained.

For the record:

1) I let Windows manage the virtual memory;
2) On bootup, I have 88% resources free;
3) I increased the MiniSP's to 8 a few years ago, when I was having trouble
with something;
4) There was literally only a couple MB's of stuff in the Temp/IE folders;
5) ScanDisk and Defrag have been done on a consistent basis, no problems;
6) Office is not installed;
7) No ghosts in Device Manager in SafeMode;

I've even uninstalled ZoneAlarm, hoping that might be the culprit. It wasn't
(assuming I got it all out). There is a firewall in the D-Link router I use
to connect it to the XP machine and then to my DSL, but that can't be it.

Just an annoying problem that won't wreck my day, but I'm fixated now in
discovering what's wrong. <grrr>

Thanks for the suggestions,
Bruce
