Home Networking/DSL Questions

Mike

I setup a network in my house using LinkSys DSL router BEFSR1, three W2K Pro
computers.
Router using PPPoE connection to Verizon DSL (East), three computers belong
to same workgroup,
TCP/IP, File and Printer sharing and Net Beui enabled on all three
computers.

Questions:

Before I can access resources on another computer, via the network, I
need to enter an username/password.
The last time I sent up the same network I configured it so I didn't
have to enter username/password to
access remote resources. How can I configure the so it doesn't prompt
me for username/password to access
remote resources?

Where can I find a good home networking FAQ and troubleshooting web
site?

Where can I find good site re: securing home networks and optimizing
them?

Need to do the same thing with a friends DLink 802.11b home network.
Believe the DLink network is supposed to transmit data at 20mps.
Don't know if that means its some kind of hybrid 802.11b protocol.

Thanks in advance,

Mike

Create a Domain -- so that you only enter username/password at logon OR
don't do this.

With DSL you imply an Internet connections -- configuring machines without
requiring a password for resource access is an (obsolete) insecure and
dangerous practice.

hope this helps

If you know anything about how to get my laptop to be able
to share a printer and files over a 802.11b router then
let me know. Both in the same workgroup with different
names. printer is set to share but neither allow acces to
the other due to net logon problems on my desktop I guess
but I am not sure.

Let me know and check out my post that I sent earlier this
afternoon in regards to this problem.

Yes, I have a dsl router internet connection.
I guess a firewall should be installed on each PC?

A firewall is no real substitute for password security.

A firewall at (before, on, behind) the Router/DSL is appropriate
too.

Individual computer firewalls are find but require more effort to keep
correctly configured. They can provide an additional layer of defense.

Mike,

You need to create a user and password that you use to log on one
machine on all the other machines, i.e. each machine should have 3
users and passwords, the passwords can be blank. On my home network of
3 hardwire PC's and 2 wireless laptops I have them all set so that I
don't need to log on.

For security I have a hardware firewall, a software firewall on each
machine (to check if anything is trying to phone home) antivirus
software, anti trojan software, adware removal software and all the
latest os patches. The hardware firewall isn't strictly necessary, but
it came as part of a print server/wireless access point.

Make sure all of the connected computers have one account
on each of them with the same password. Log in one time on
each computer and map to another computer and tell it to
reconnect at log on and that should correct the problem.

If you enable the guest account, this will allow access without the need for a password. Of course this isn't a recommended
sollution as it removes all security.

Thank you,
