Home Network

I am trying to connect 2 computers together on a home network. I am using a Wireless ADSL Modem Router with a desktop connected through the LAN connection and a laptop connected through the wireless connection. Both computers are able to connect to the internet ok but cannot see each other. When I try to open the MSHOME in explorer I get the error message
"MSHOME is not available. You might not have permission to use the network resource. Contact the administrator of this servor to find out if you have access permission
The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available

I am logging on as the administrator and I used to be able to see both machines but obviously some settings have changed.

you need to install netBEUI on all computers, for Win2000
and WinXP you will need to install it from your install CD
and copy the correct drivers into the correct places, or
you can just download this file I made and just double-
click it on all computer running win200 and winXP ( DO NOT
RUN THIS ON ANY OTHER OS SUCH AS WIN98 OR ME ), this will
extract the NetBEUI driver files into the correct place so
that now you can add the NetBEUI network protocal, NOW YOU
WILL BEABLE TO CONNECT THEM.

I created this file because I see this same post in here
20 times per day for the last 3 years and Im not going to
explain how to get the files from your install CD every
time I see it, and NOW YOU MUST HELP OTHERS in this forum
and tell them what they need to do.

And why would anyone ever need NetBEUI? TCP/IP has to be configured
correctly for the Internet to work via the ADSL router anyway!!

OHHH BOY,
NETBEUI???? Why would you do something like this????
Tcp/ip ONLY, you have to turn on file & print sharing.
Share out your C: drive or whatever drive you want the
other computer to see, make sure you give enough rights.
Networking 101. Make sure that the workgroups are the same
on both computers. Hey RCT lay off of the weed.

NetBEUI has been a "universal antidote" to network problems for many years.
I first discovered it in 1996, and have used it since then. It resolves
problems in small Windows networks that would otherwise require many hours
of troubleshooting.

It just seems easier to use TCP/IP only given it is required for the
Internet. NetBEUI is certainly NOT the solution to the given problem anyway.

NetBEUI is certainly *not* necessary. I, and many others, run a
network with TCP/IP only.

You do however need to remember to Enable NetBIOS (not NetBEUI) 'over'
TCP/IP

Also you do not want to have a firewall in action on the WiFi
connection; just on the one out to the Internet

But this particular problem seems to come up on a wireless connection
that has been working quite happily, and is some matter of permissions
that I have not sorted. The work around seems to be, in Network
Connections, to disable the connection and re-enable.

You don't have to disable the firewall - you just have to allow the
computers on your LAN access through the firewall. It's pretty easy
to do with ZA. I don't use the ICF provided by MS so I don't know how
easy it would be with it.
