I have connected 2 home computers using a direct cable. I
used the wizard and created a netsetup disk.
I get the following message on both computers
\\Name is not available
you might not have permission to use this network resource
The network path was not found

I cannot ping either machine.
However when one of the PC's is turned on or off the
other PC notices it, with a network cable disconnected
message.

This is XP home, and I am right up to date with updates.
One of the machines always creates a network bridge, I
have manually removed the bridge but this does not
resolve the problem.

1. Permanently disable XP's built-in Internet Connection Firewall on
local area network connections -- it's for use only on a direct modem
connection to the Internet. Disable and un-install all other
firewalls while troubleshooting. Details here:

2. Use only one protocol for File and Printer Sharing. If the network
needs more than one protocol, unbind File and Printer Sharing from all
but one of them. Details here:

3. Make sure that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on all computers.
