Home Network Setup

I have two computers, one from work running XP Pro, and the other is my home
computer running XP Pro also. I've installed NIC cards on both machines and
have run the network setup wizard. I have the two machines connected with a
crossover cable, but neither computer will recognize the connection, saying
"A network cable is unplugged". I need to network the computers to transfer
some very large projects from the home computer to the work computer, as well
as use my internet connection to update the work computer. Both computers
have been assigned a work group name, and both computers have different
computer names. The network STILL wont work. What am I doing wrong
here????? Thanks everyone for their help!
