home networking

I have tried to set up a home network between two computers using network
setup wizard. I have used a crossover cable. Both computers show that the
LAN is connected. But, when I try to access the the network through windows
explorer it only shows the work group name (whick is Home). One computer
sometimes show both computers but I cannot access the remote computer. The
other computer just shows "Home" in the directory and when I try to access
"Home"it gives me a message:

Home is not accessible. You may not have Permissions...

I also have set up several folders and a printer for sharing.

Does anyone have a solution for this problem?

Thanks for your reply Chuck. Here is the exact wording of the error message:

Home is not accessible. You may not have permission to use this network
resource.
Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access
permissions.

The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available.

OK, that's a browser problem. Make sure that NetBT is Enabled on each computer.

Next, look for a misconfigured or overlooked personal firewall, or other
security component. There are several other possibilities too, and any might be
the cause of your problem. Read this article with an open mind.

Or look at "browstat status", "ipconfig /all", "net config server", and "net
config workstation", from each computer, and diagnose the problem. Read this
article, and linked articles, and follow instructions precisely (download
browstat!):

And do both of us a favour - reply after my posts.

Chuck
I enabled NetBIOS on both computers and disabled firewall and virus
protection on both computers and got them to connect with file and printer
sharing. I could not get internet sharing to work. Unless you have a quick
solution, I will do a little research and start a new thread for that
problem.
Thanks for you help.
I though I was bottom posting; I hit the reply button on the last text box
on the page.
Is this reply bottom poste?
Thanks again
Ed

Hi Ed,

You have the bottom posting thing down.

Now it's good that you did get file and printer sharing working, but at the
expense of firewall and virus protection is NOT good. So re enable each
protection, one item at a time, and test again with each change. When you find
file sharing has stopped, then find out what setting you changed to cause it to
stop, then figure out how to make it work properly.

As far as Internet access, do a 4 step test on each computer, and we'll see
what's up there.
# From a command window:
1. Ping www.yahoo.com.
2. Ping 66.94.230.33.
3. Note success / exact text of error messages.
# From your browser:
1. Browse www.yahoo.com.
2. Browse 66.94.230.33.
3. Note success / exact text of error messages.
