Help

I have a home network using a desktop and laptop pc, both
with WXP pro and SP3. Using netgear wireless router
connected by wire to the desktop and by wireless netgear
usb adapter to laptop.

I set up a network and can file share.

I can run remote desktop from the desktop to the laptop,
but not the other way around

I can ping the laptop from the desktop, but not the
other way around.

I want to run remote desktop on the laptop to control the
desktop.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Bob

Don't know what SP3 is, but if you are running SP2 with the firewall
enabled, go to Control Panel/Security Center. On the Exceptions tab for the
Windows Firewall, check the box for Remote Desktop.

My bad - I am running service pack 2. Forgot to mention,
I have made the exception for remote desktop. I even
completely disabled the firewalls on both computers,
Both are set up for networking and both use tcp/ip
internet protocal. I use vpn from the desktop to connect
to a work computer, and thought that maybe some of the
stuff that the vpn adds into the network configuration
was the problem, so I loaded the vpn s/w on both
computers. But still no luck.

Here is a summary of the stuff I have under my network
properties:

1) client for ms networks
2) file & print sharing for ms networks
3) deterministic network enhancer
4) service advertising protocal
5) QoS packet scheduler
6) nwlink netbios
7) nwlink ipx/spx/netbios compatible transport protocal
8) internet protocal (tcp/ip)

I believe that 4 and 5 get added when I install vpn for
work.

My network is as follows:
192.168.0.1 - wireless router
192.168.0.2 - desktop wired to router
192.168.0.3 - laptop usb wireless connected to router

want to run .2 remotely from .3, cannot ping .3 from .2
but can do the reverse for remote desktop and ping.

Any help is greatly appreciated as I have spent a ton of
time troubleshooting.

ps also have tried router set up w/ and w/o security, but
since I can file share I dont think that is the problem

I think I'm beginning to sound like a fanatic about this...

Deterministic Network Enhancer is one item installed by Cisco 3000 VPN.
I don't know if other VPN clients use this too. Maybe your problem is
similar and you can modify my solution to your needs.

In my case, I've used Cisco for awhile then updated to SP2. The update
appears to break the Cisco client. I used Add/Remove Programs to remove
Cisco without clearing up the problem. The symptoms are very similar to
having a firewall installed on the problem computer, but no obvious
firewall softwall can be found. I found these ZoneLabs firewall
components on my computer - vsutil.dll and vsdatant.sys.

To fix this problem, I did the following:

1) Find and use complete manual uninstall instructions for Cisco VPN
client and ZoneAlarm.

2) Reset TCP/IP stack

3) Reinstall Cisco VPN Client

4) Add exception to Windows Firewall suggested in Cisco support forum.
(Mine works fine without it, but some people seem to need it)

5) Uncheck "Stateful firewall" in the Cisco Client so I could use my
home network during a VPN session.

If you are running Cisco 3000 VPN, I have links to the detailed manual
uninstall instructions, or you can search for some of my previous posts.

Really hope this helps,

Lance

Lance,

Your the Man !

Cisco VPN was the culprit. As soon as I unloaded it all
was well.

Thanks for responding to my post !
