I hooked up a home network with my 2 computers with a new
Dell Dimension 8300 as the host with an old Gateway. They
are both set up with an ethernet card because we have MSN
DSL. My problem is that every so often I get a brief
message on the bottom of the screen on my Dell that
says "Network Cable Is Unplugged" I have unchecked the
box which says show connections in the network connection
properties menu but the message still occurs. This
happens all the time even if both computers are on.

Hello!
The reason that this isn't working is because to make a
direct connection via ethernet between two network client
devices (computer ethernet cards in this case) you need to
use a crossover cable.
The easiest solution is to go to your nearest computer
supply store and buy a crossover cable, but if you're of
the do-it-yourself inclination, then a good guide is here:
