Home Network Configuarion

Hi,

I have the following equipments:

1. Cable Modem
2. Router - Microsoft Broadband Networking Wireless Base Station MN-7
3. Win 2003 server with ISA 2000
4. A few XP desktop and laptop

I would like to have the Win 2003 machine connected directly to cable modem
so that I can use ISA to protect all machines and at the same time, I can
use Win 2003's VPN feature to log on remotely. Any hint on how I should
configure the network of Win 2003 server (I have 2 network cards on it),
router and other XP machines.

Thanks.

Andrew.

here is my recommendation,

internet -> modem -> ISA server -> all clinet computers.

one ip address on the ISA will have to be public and the other private like
10.0.0.0 or 192.168.0.0 range.
i guess you really don't need a router in this case.

Jimmy,

Thanks for your prompt response. I got a few more questions.

1. What subnet and default gateway setting I should use for my prviate
network adapter.
2. I would like to keep the router in the pciture because I would like to
use it wireless feature; so how should I configure it. I guess I would to
use the DHCP on Win 2003 rather that the one on the router.

Thanks.

Andrew.

i guess the easiest would be,

internet -> modem -> ISA server ->router-> all clinet computers

set the router to pass dhcp addresses from the ISA dhcp server, that way all
wireless clients can pick up an ip address

internally you can use something like 192.168.0.1 - 192.168.0.255 with a
subnet of 255.255.255.0

ISA internal NIC 192.168.0.1
router 192.168.0.2
rest on dhcp

So how about default gateway for internal NIC, router and other XP clients?

default gateway would be 192.168.0.1 depending on the setup.

ISA should do the proxy stuff so all users will be able to go to the
internet.

Thanks, I will try it tonight.

cool, make sure that you configure the ISA correctly though, not sure how
familiar you are with it but if that's not doing the proxy then it won't
work.
