Home network awry

M

Mike

I have a desktop (XP Pro) and a laptop (XP Home). I had
succesfully connected them in a home network and I was
accessing the Internet on the laptop through the desktop
(host). During my vacation I connected the laptop (this
time as a host) to another laptop. Everything went fine.
Upon my return, despite several attempts and several runs
of the Network Wizardon on both machines, there is no way
I can re-establish the connection mentioned above
(desktop-laptop), in terms of file sharing and Internet
connection on the laptop. Everything seems to be messed
up: one computer does not see the other or sometimes it
does but no file sharing can be done.
Detail:
- connection is via a network cable, no hub

Please help, I am at my wits' end.
Thanks,
Mike

Mike,

Please start with ipconfig information for each computer.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in Notepad, copy and paste into your next post.
Identify operating system (by name and version) with each ipconfig listing.

From each computer, test connectivity:
1) Ping the other by name.
2) Ping the other by ip address.
3) Ping itself by name.
4) Ping itself by ip address.
5) Ping 127.0.0.1.
Report success / exact error displayed in each test (10 tests total).

From each computer, test shares visibility (use actual name / address of each
computer as appropriate):
Start - Run then:
1) \\ThisComputerByName
2) \\ThisComputerByIPAddress
3) \\OtherComputerByName
4) \\OtherComputerByIPAddress
Report visibility of shares / exact error displayed in each test (8 tests
total).

Cheers,
Chuck

Hi Mike,

It's almost always better to post in the same thread. I have a watch filter set
for it. Just don't change the Subject / Title field.

OK, thanks. I think it won't be easy for me to do all you
asked for, but I'll give it a try. If I need
clarifications I'll let you know.
