Home Edition freezes - 2 cases

For the past several weeks I have been experiencing, with increasing
frequency, my Home XP SP1 freezing with the HD light flickering and
sometimes staying on solid. No keyboard or mouse response. KB823980 is
the only update installed. After about a 15 to 20 minute wait, the
system sorts itself out and things go back to normal. There seems to be
no pattern to this problem. It is as though XP is doing some slow
housekeeping whenever it wants to. And, just this morning when I tried
to shutdown the system I got as far as the 'Windows is shutting down'
window the system froze with the HD light on. After an hour or so wait
I decided to reset.

I have scanned for viruses and spyware and found nothing and also
searched this ng on the subject but found nothing that helped with the
'freeze while running' situation. Also, I have the latest video driver
from the manufactures website.

Again, things seemed to be working fine up until about 2 weeks ago.

I welcome any thoughts and/or help on this.

Thank you.

Is system restore enabled on your computer? If so, you can restore your
computer to a prior date before adding the update or back even further if
you have an idea about when the trouble began.

Thank you for your reply.

Yes, it is enabled and it was the first thing I tried but that yielded
no solution. I think my next step will be to restore an earlier Ghost
image.

After that will try a repair install. What the heck, I've little to
loose.
