Holy smokes! Failed forestprep???!?!?!

Mark R.

I'm taking a W2K native mode domain to W2K3. Beginning
the process by running forestprep on the schema master
for the domain. I verified that the account I am using is
a member of the schema admins group and that all the DCs
are patched to SP4, etc., etc. Anyhow, I'm running the
adprep/forestprep from the i386 directory off of the C:
drive on the server. About 1 minute into this it
bluescreens! I immediately pulled the cable on it but
several 1137 informationals in the other DCs. Anyhow, two
reboots later and it finally recovers. Event logs say
that the KCC has kicked in and confirmed that everything
is still okay. I've run dcdiag and repadmin and confirmed
that everything is replicating correctly. All the shares
are there that should be (sysvol and netlogon).

Here is a bit from the adprep log:
----------
Adprep was unable to upgrade the schema on the schema
master.
[Status/Consequence]
The schema will not be restored to its original state.
[User Action]
Check the Ldif.err log file in the C:\WINNT\system32
\debug\adprep\logs\20040624154729 directory for detailed
information.

Adprep was unable to update forest-wide information.
[Status/Consequence]
Adprep requires access to existing forest-wide
information from the schema master in order to complete
this operation.
[User Action]
Check the log file, Adprep.log, in the C:\WINNT\system32
\debug\adprep\logs\20040624154729 directory for more
information.
----------
Here is the only entry from the ldif.err log:
----------
Entry DN: CN=ms-WMI-
TargetType,CN=Schema,CN=Configuration,DC=xxxx,DC=xxxxxxxx,
DC=com
Add error on line 665: Server Down
An error has occurred in the program
----------
Currently there appear to be no problems on the network
or with AD. Anyone ever seen a failed forestprep? If not,
what do I have to look forward to with domainprep???
Sheesh...

Hi Mark

Out of interest, what was the STOP code? Have you considered trying this
from a different DC?

Kind regards

Here is one of them. The original crash did not save a
dump file and I was too freaked out to think about writing
it down from the screen. Sorry!

The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck
was: 0x0000000a (0x00000000, 0x00000002, 0x00000001,
0x80449080). Microsoft Windows 2000 [v15.2195]. A dump was
saved in: C:\WINNT\MEMORY.DMP.

I'll try rerunning it on a different DC today and post the
results.

Hi Mark

From the debugger help:
This bug check is issued if paged memory (or invalid memory) is accessed
when the IRQL is too high.

The error that generates this bug check usually occurs after the
installation of a faulty device driver, system service, or BIOS.

Based on this, my guess is that this isn't related to the forestprep itself.

Kind regards
