hive file

I get an error message that states the registry cannot load
the hive file systemroot\system32\config\software or log
its alternate. When I try to follow the microsoft
instuctions from the recovery console and help page, I
can't copy one of the files. Is there any way to get this
file?

Thanks

Hi Doug,

Replace the software hive by following the following steps.

1 Boot to recovery console.

2 At the c:\windows prompt type the following lines hitting enter after
each.
ren c:\windows\system32\config\software software.bak
copy c:\windows\repair\software c:\windows\system32\config\software
exit

3 Check to make sure the system boots(when it boots it might give strange
messages about software, simply instruct the customer to reload any software
that might have been affected by the change in system settings).
