Hitachi IBM SATA not recognized by Win XP SP@

My system: Dell XPS running Win XP SP2

Just purchased a new IBM Hitachi Deskstar 7K250.

Installed it properly in terms of physical properties - cabled up with
proper cables, etc..

Upon first boot-up, a blue screen & white font runs through a diagnostic of
some sort, saying that "the volume is dirty" and that the drive is formated
"FAT32" (my other two drives - SATA 400 gb - are formated NTSF....and
they're running fine..

Everything else during the diagnostic signals OK...

Finishes booting up....but the new IBM Hitachi drive does not show up. No
nothing.

Tried rebooting, etc....still nothing. Tried "F2" going into set-up...can't
find drive.

Tried physically uninstalling, booting the computer, then
uninstalling...nothing.

Tried System Recovery.....nothing.

There are no jumpers, of course, on the drive because it's a SATA.

And there are no device driver updates on Hitachi or IBM sites.

Don't know what to do...

Any help/suggestion is much appreciated...

Does the physical disk show in the Disk Management panel (Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, Computer Management, Storage)? If so, you only need to
assign it a drive letter, but you may want to re-partition and reformat in NTFS
first.

No.....the SATA HD does not appear in Disk Management, nor in Explorer/My
Computer/etc.

Have reaffirmed cables, swapped cables, etc.

Disk is getting power.....it heats up.

Tried physically uninstalling and rebooting and powering down and installing
again....does not appear.

Tried System Restore....doesn't appear.

That's about it...

Out of ideas....

Maybe the HD itself is bad, or the SATA controller burps with the 3rd HD added.
You mentioned earlier the controller BIOS called it "dirty," but I don't know
what that means in context.

Try disconnecting the other HDs, boot from your XP install CD, and see if it
detects the HD.

Does your SATA controller come with any Windoze drivers? If so, you may need to
install them, regardless of whether you use RAID.

Check with Dell. You may need to install a SATA driver and since it is a
Dell PC, they should provide the driver, if one exists!

A new drive shouldn't be formatted at all, FAT32 or otherwise, so this makes
me wonder if it is indeed a new drive. Of course, I haven't bought any
IBM/Hitachi drives in years, so maybe this is the norm for them.

Since you already have two SATA's running, this implies you have already
populated the on-chip SATA controllers, so I assume you have an on-board
extra SATA controller (like Sil3112) that requires its own bios to run. Do
you have it enabled properly in the bios, and does it show up after POST?
An on-board, off-chip SATA controller should show its own bios screen right
after POST.

If you have one available, try installing the drive into a mobile rack or
external enclosure (USB2 or Firewire) and try getting it recognized that
way. After it is partitioned and formatted NTFS you can then try to
relocate it in its proper place.

And there are no device driver updates on Hitachi or IBM sites.

Since it is a new drive you might try calling Hitachi tech support.
