Hard drive recognized in CMOS but not Explorer

I have a 3 yr old Micron Millenia Max with an IBM
(Hitachi) Ultra ATA/66 hard drive jumpered as master.
On the same cable I have a Zip Drive. I wanted to install
a new WDC 100 gb ATA drive as a slave. I uninstalled the
ZIP drive software, and switched the cable to the new
hard drive after jumpering this drive to slave. I also
have a floppy, CDRW, and DVD drive on the system. I
configured the CMOS correctly using LBA on both drives.
(The CMOS screen showed the master and slave in
appropriate positions. When I booted up, Explorer did not
recognize the new drive. Device manager showed it and
indicated that it was working properly. The original
drive is location 0(0), the new drive is 1(1), The CDRW
is 1(1) and the DVD is 0(0). I did not format or
partition the drive as I intend to restore an image to it
and then use it a new master drive.

Can anyone give me advice

Since the drive is not partitioned or formatted, it
cannot be used for data, therefore, Explorer will not
show it.

After you partition/format, it will show up in Explorer.

Right click on My Computer and select Manage. On the following screen,
click on Disk Management. The drive should now show up on the right hand
side of the screen from where you can partition and format it (if required)
and then assign it a drive letter.

All HD imaging products I've used use a DOS based diskette started
utility to restore entire images from. You don't need explorer to be
able to see the drive in that case. The imaging program will partion,
format, and write data to the drive you specify. After that, when XP
restarts, the drive will be visible.
