History Settings

Bob Horton

I apologize in advance if this has been previously answered; I am having
trouble hitting the magic search keywords that don't return either no hits
or a million.

My quandary is this: I have IE history set to retain my history for 20 days.
When I pull up history, there are tabs for the previous two weeks but no
links contained there. The browsing history for the past days of the
current week are there. What am I missing?

TIA.

Hi Bob :)

Start here:

The Cache

It is also possible that your History Folder or Index.dat has become
corrupted. You can delete them and Windows will create new ones for you on
reboot. You don't mention which version of Windows you are using, but, here
is the information on how to do this in XP.

Delete the History folder and index.dat:

Hope this helps.

Thanks Jan. I had cleared the history on this machine (XP Pro) a month or
so ago with no joy; obviously this isn't a new issue for it! I ordinarily
clear history and cookies and all "internet files" at least once a month (I
know that's probably too long, but with the 300 GB HDD the machine has, it's
easy to have other priorities!). I just manually deleted the history files;
I guess I'll see if that has any impact, but I don't know how to tell if it
will without just waiting and seeing :)

Thanks again.

Hi Bob :)

You are saying that you have cleared the History. There is a difference in
clearing the History, and deleting the History Folder and creating a new
one. If all that you have done thus far is clear the History, then it is
not the same. It is not uncommon for the History, Index.dat and Favorites,
etc. Folder to get corrupted at some point. That is why Windows will create
a new one if you delete it. Just back up your History if you like with the
information below, then delete the History Folder according to the
information that I gave you, if you have not done that, and let Windows
create a new one for you by simply rebooting. You can back up your History
if you like using the following:

Backup IE History

Hope this helps.
