History not working

I've just done a clean install of Windows XP (sp2) and applied all the
critical updates from Windows Update.

History in IE6 does not appear to be working, when I open the History pane
it's empty (or occassionally showing 'Today' with a history of sites visited
this session).

I was wondering whether there is any way to repair History in IE6?

Thanks,
Paul

Hi,
History problems can be caused by the ActiveX Control filters in McAfee
AntiVirus. If you disable the "Active X Controls" filter under the Internet
Filters in VirusScan the IE History should work properly.

Or... Your History folder may be damaged.
Free History Eraser from
http://smartprotector.com/eraser/free-history-eraser.htm will delete the
History folder and a new one will be created when you restart.

Or the History folder can be deleted manually:
See: How To Delete the Internet Explorer Temporary Internet Files:

Hope this helps,

Thank you, you saved me having to ask the same question as I have exactly
the same problem as well. Now reconfigured the McAfee AntiVirus programme
and my History folder now works fine. Taken me ages to find this solution!
Also wondered why a Cookie folder, Temporary Internet Files folder and
History folder keep going into the C:\Windows\Temp folder?

Hi,
If using WindowsXP, those folders in C:\WINDOWS\TEMP are normal. On my XP
machine those folders contain only index.dat files. The *real* history and
cache files are under your user profile at C:\Documents and
settings\[username]\Local Settings (possibly a hidden folder.)

It's just part of the system that Windows uses to index those files.

Browse these messages http://snipurl.com/bpan or go to
http://groups-beta.google.com/group/microsoft.public.windowsxp.general
and put these terms in the search box to the right of
"microsoft.public.windowsxp.general"

index.dat
temporary internet files
cache

Hope this helps,
Don

Hi,

Yes you're right, turning of ActiveX virus checking does indeed solve the
problem. Are ActiveX viruses common, I don't know whether turning off this
option leaves me vulnerable.

Thanks again for the reply.

With Kind Regards
Paul

Does anybody know how to increase the amount of time in the history folder
showing searches?

I'm a little late in experiencing this problem, but I have the same problem
with IE6 history. Would love to trun the Active X Controls" filter off, but
I can't find the "Active X Control" filter "internet Filter" in Virus Scan -
No tab/option for Internet Filter. Help!

Hi,
More information please. ;-) Is Internet Explorer not keeping the history
of sites visited? Or, are you having a problem with Autocomplete?

Don, my problem is the same as the one reported in the 1/3/2005 post:
"History in IE6 does not appear to be working, when I open the History pane
it's empty (or occassionally showing 'Today' with a history of sites visited
this session)."

McAfee and IE6 are both current?

Hi,
If memory serves (I haven't had McAfee installed for a year or so)
McAfee Control Panel> Internet Filter> ActiveX Filter> Disable.

The other possibility is a corrupted History folder.
Try deleting the History folder for the affected user account. A new one
will be create on restart.

The procedure [Windows XP]
Login as another user with administrator privileges, or from the machine's
default administrator account (startup in safe mode.) Make sure that you can
see hidden and system files (Folder Options> View) then delete the affected
History folder from Windows Explorer. It will be at [C:\Documents and
Settings\yourusername\Local Settings\History] Restart the computer.

If not using Windows XP or 2K, see instructions at
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm for deletion of the History folder.

Don, I've tried everything you suggested, as well as, the McAfee thingie,
still to no avail. Must admit, however, still can't find the correct
controls in McAfee to disable ActiveX. Members, any more suggestions are
greatly appreciated. Oh by the way, I am running Windows XP Home Edition.
