History not recorded

I tried asking this in the win98 group, but I suspect nobody looks there
anymore...

A couple of weeks ago IE6 simply stopped keeping a record of the sites I've
visited. Nothing shows up in the history pane, and links on a web page stay
as normal (blue) links, and are never shown as visited. IE 6.0.2800.1106 on
Win98SE.

I've tried clearing away much older history, clearing the temporary internet
files, cookies, etc., also ran IE's repair tool. Nothing doing.

Any ideas?

Some spyware/malware programs have a setting that will automatically delete the history files, when the browser is closed, PC is rebooted, or after XX days. If you have install this type of program such as the various "toolbars" (Yahoo, Google, MSN, etc...) available on the net. You will need to check the options/preferences/tools section and make sure that this feature is not set.

I used to use a free pop-up blocker called "FreeSurfer", and if you set the pop-up blocker to "run silently", it would prevent the history files to be created. Additionally, if you use Security suites like Norton or McAfee, there may be a similar setting that you need to change, to gain back the History files.

I probably should have given more information:

First, there's nothing like googlebar installed. This is a relatively
new/clean install of Win98SE.

The problem happened very suddenly. The history and everything else in IE
was working fine. I visited some site (don't remember where) and it crashed
IE. When I started IE again, it no longer kept track of any sites I had
visited, however, all of the previous history (from before the crash) was
still there. It only fails to track sites that I've visited since the crash.

You should download the following programs, and run them one at a time, to check for remove any adware/malware that might be found on your PC. That might have occured when your PC crashed.

Hi,
You might have a corrupted History folder. Delete the History folder. A new
one will be created on restart.

Restart in Ms-Dos mode
From C:\> (type and press Enter after each command)

cd\windows
smartdrv
deltree history

Restart via Ctrl-Alt-Delete
