History lost - IE6 - W2k

E

Eve

Since the last windows update, my browser (IE6) is not
keeping page visited history, it's blank!

I searched the knowledge base and turned off the active-x
controls in my virus scanner (being the only reference to
history i could find) but this didn't work.

My settings are the same as they were (ie keep history for
20 days). Using w2k (completely updated) and IE6.

Has anyone else seen this problem?

thanks!

Eve

Hi,

Explanation on History:

"The global history is the list displayed when a user brings up the History
bar. These items represent sites visited across all sessions by that user
and are taken from the user’s Temporary Internet Files folder. To avoid
having a URL added to this list, you can specify that the file should not
be cached; hence, it won’t be present in the Temporary Internet Files
folder."

The above statement explains that if the files are not cached, the URL's
would not be added to the list. Check your browser settings for the
Temporary Internet Files folder size.

Is this is a client server scenario please check the Group Policy settings
on the server and local policy setting on the client. If you set the
"Disable changing history setting properties" policy (located in \User
Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Internet
Explorer\) at the server/client side.

Hope this helps…..

Thanks for the reply Ashok, but unfortunately it didn't
help. I have plenty of temp file space and it still isn't
recording history. No settings were changed, and I suspect
the last windows update did something to stop the
recording :(

Hi,

Do you have McAfee installed on your system. If the answer is yes, it's a
known fact that McAfee running ActiveX can be responsible for History
"problems". It is recomended that you disable this feature first. Then
see if any new history is being created by going to a few web pages and
then check for history in the explorer pane. Take a look at these links
as they will clarify just how to go about deleting the history folder
correctly. If the problem is related to a
corrupted History Folder with index.dat, this will provide the info that
you need to do that.

Method 1:
========
1. Log on as Administrator (or log on as another user that has
Administrator privileges)
2. Start -> Run
3. Type "C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\"
4. Delete the folders "History" and "Temporary Internet Files" (these are
hidden folders, so got to Tools->Folder options-> View tab and enable the
show all hidden files)
5. Reboot the system and log on as the desired user (this recreates the
folders if they are corrupted)

Method 2: [ I hate to delete the user's profile :( ]
========
1. Log on as Administrator (or log on as another user that has
Administrator privileges)
2. Delete the profile of the desired <username> folder and reboot.

If none of the above methods work, try this site (explains the structure
of IE 5, but it's worth a read for knowledge):
http://www.purgeie.com/errcache.htm - Details about the different paths
for different OS's.

Hope this helps ...
