highlighting using control

B

bobbymike

When I am in My Pictures and want to move a group of them to another folder,
I put my mouse over the first picture and it does not highlight ... then I
put on the control key and the pictures still do not highlight. If I click on
the picture, it make copies after copies, so I have to drag each picture one
at a time into the new folder. I cannot figure out why my pictures are not
highlighting. Any help is greatly appreciated. I have an HP computer.
Thank You

I am unsure what you mean - but taking you at your word, I will throw in
some proper terminology and perhaps we can figure it out.

You are trying to move (not copy - which would make a duplicate and leave
the original in place) some pictures (we'll just call them files - that is
what they are) from one location (a directory on your computer) to another
location (a different directory on your computer.) In order to attempt this
you are:

- 'put [your] mouse over the first picture' --> Take the mouse pointer
(arrow) and move it until it is 'hovering' over the file name you wish to
copy. Are you also clicking ONCE and releasing the left mouse button to
SELECT the file? You state it 'does not highlight' - well it wouldn't -
your files are not 'motion sensitive' more than likely. Unless you have a
very fancy car - try this experiment: Take your keys out and hold them over
the ignition slot that is supposed to start your car... Does anything light
up/start? ;-) Same difference - you need to CLICK (depress/release) the
left mouse button. That will select/highlight the single file.
- 'put on the control key' --> I have to guess this means you are 'holding
down the control key', sometimes shortened to CTRL. I'm going out on a limb
and guessing you are doing this because you read someplace it allows you to
select multiple files (in fact it does - it allows you to select multiple
non-contiguous files.) In order for the CTRL key trick to work, you should
have FIRST clicked on one of the many files you want. Then you hold down
the control/ctrl key and click on another file you want to select.

"Click" in this case means press/release the left mouse button while the
mouse pointer/arrow is hovering over the filename you wish to select. Be
sure to RELEASE the button quickly or you might suffer from shakey-mouse...
Where you begin the copy early because you dragged and dropped instead of
just selecting.

For those having trouble using the mouse because of 'shakey mouse
syndrome' - there is a way to use nothing but the keyboard for the most
part...

If CTRL+Click is not working for you, it is usually a case of shakey mouse
syndrome. Try *not* using the mouse.

CTRL allows one to select objects at random.
SHIFT selects contiguous objects.
That is the way of Windows Explorer - has been for many versions.

With the mouse:
---------------------
To select more than one item such as 2 different paragraphs in Word, 4 cells
in Excel, 3 graphics in PowerPoint, or 10 files in Windows Explorer, choose
either [Shift] or [Ctrl]. The basic steps work in Microsoft Office, Windows
Explorer, and many other Windows programs.

To select a contiguous (touching) area use [Shift]:

1. Click once on the first item.
2. Press and hold [Shift].
3. Click on the last item that you want to highlight and everything in
between will also be selected.
4. Perform an action such as formatting.

To select non-contiguous (unrelated) items use [Ctrl]:

1. Click one on the first item.
2. Press and hold [Ctrl] and, click on each of the other items, press
[Ctrl] again to unselect.
3. Perform the action to finish working with the highlighted area.

A random Google find on the subject - with pictures:
http://www.pc-help-online.co.uk/libdoc.php?doc=50
(The last part of it shows you contiguous and non-contiguous selecting...)

Without the Mouse:
-------------------------

To select a contiguous (touching) area use [Shift]:

1. Select the first file in whatever way you are comfortable (click,
arrow to it and press the [Spacebar], etc.)
2. Press and hold down [Shift].
3. Use the arrow keys to move around and highlight the last file.
4. All items in between should be selected.

To select non-contiguous (unrelated) items use [Ctrl]:
1. Select the first file in whatever way you are comfortable (click,
arrow to it and press the [Spacebar], etc.)
2. Press and hold down [CTRL].
3. Use the arrow keys to move around and highlight the next file.
4. Press the [Spacebar].
5. Repeat until you have all the non-contiguous files you wish
highlighted.
