highlighted text will not delete

After highlighting text in word 2002 and pressing the backspace key, nothing
happens. Even when I enter a key the letter does not replace the highlighted
text, but goes in front of the text. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,
Joe

On the Edit tab of Tools | Options, make sure you have "Typing replaces
