How do I get backspace to delete chunks of highlighted text?

I used to be able to highlight text and then delete the it by pressing the
Backspace key. I can no longer do this. The backspace key will delete one
character at a time but not a highlighted chunk. How can I rectify this

Select Tools > Options > Edit tab and turn on "Typing replaces selection".
