High pitched, really fast streaming media.

I have Win pro 2000, IE 6 and whenever I do any kind of media
stream/download, it plays twice as fast as it should, and the pitch goes up
significantly. CD's are also affected, but games (even ones on cd) are not
affected. Any suggestions?
 
Drivers,codecs... especially for integrated sound and codec packs.
