Hiding the Drive from others

D

Don Phillipson

With a simple technique you can hide a drive from other. Just be sure
that before hiding the drive, there should not be any files in use
else you would not be able to hide the drive.

This advice seems unfactual. The (file or folder) "Hidden" means
files or folders will not be displayed to normal commands. It
does not disable their function (Registry/Hive etc.)

As "Don Phillipson" says, what you say is not strictly true.

In WinXP, there are two different ways of making a drive inaccessible.

The first is to hide the drives and is the same as in WIn9x, this is
controlled with the registry key :

[HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoDrives"=hex:00,00,00,08

....and can be set using the [free] Microsoft TweakUI.exe utility.

But this first method only *hides* the drive in Windows Explorer (and
"browse" for files and folders) but all files and folders on it are still
accessible.

The second method is to actually make a drive inaccessible to a user - this
is only available on NT-based systems. This *would* stop any files on the
drive from being accessed and is controlled by the reg-value :

[HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoViewOnDrive"=dword:00000008

This setting (and the other) can be set using the 3rd-party application
FreshUI.exe

(the actual numerical values quoted refer to drive d:)
