Hiding inactive Icons

On Windows XP, there is a setting on the taskbar to hide the icons that
show up on the far right hand side. Is there a setting in Windows 2000
that will allow me to decide which icon show and which don't?

There is not such a setting. Some of the applications that own those
icons may have an option not to display them in the system tray, but not
all do.
