HIDING FIRST PAGE SLIDE NUMBER

I am having trouble hiding the slide number on the first slide.

The slide numbers were inserted via the Master Slide. Insert/Text
box/Insert/slide number. Then I go to View/Header and Footer and check the
box "Don't show on title slide." But a number shows on the first and every
other slide. Ideas?

Your first slide does not necessarily have to be a title slide.

"Don't show on title slide" will hide the page number on every slide
that is in the layout "Title Slide." This has nothing to do with the
placement of the slide. That is, if the first slide is a Title and Text
Slide, it will show the page number, and if the 17th slide is a Title
Slide, it will not, and if the 18th slide also is a Title Slide, it also
will not.

You can certainly change the first slide to the Title Slide layout, but
that probably isn't what you want for your first slide, which is why you
didn't choose that layout in the first place. The next easiest thing is
to place a shape over the slide number to cover it. If the shape is the
same color as the background, it won't be noticeable at all.

Another easy thing to do, and this is probably the right solution for
you, is to go to the Insert Menu and choose Slide Number. Now uncheck
the checkbox for Slide Number and click Apply (not Apply to All). That
should remove the slide number from just the current slide.

A title slide isn't necessarily the first slide in a presentation, and any
slide in the presentation can be a title slide.

What matters in this case is whether the slide layout is a Title Slide layout.
