Hide Table of Content markup

I have created a Table of Contents for my document, but the markup shows in
the document when I display it. How can I hide the TOC markup in the
document so that the user doesn't see it?

It appears that you generated your TOC based on TC fields rather than
headings. TC (and XE) fields are formatted as Hidden text, so click the
Show/Hide ¶ button to hide Hidden text or (if necessary) clear the check box
for Hidden text on the View tab of Tools | Options.

What kind of "markup" do you see?

If it's {TC} fields, they are automatically formatted with the Hidden
attribute, so they're visible only when Hidden text (or all nonprinting
text) is displayed
(http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/NonPrintChars.htm). If you do see
these fields and also paragraph marks and dots in the spaces between words,
click the ¶ button to turn them off. If you see only the fields, go to Tools
Options > View (in Word 2007, Office button > Word Options > Display) and
uncheck the "Hidden" option.

If you don't have {TC} fields, but you see thick square brackets around
text, those are bookmarks. In the same Options location, uncheck the
"Bookmarks" option (in Word 2007, this is in the Advanced tab of the dialog,
in the "Show document contents" section).
