under taskbar properties if you put a check in the box to
hide inactive icons in trey---a circle and 2 tiny arrows
appear to hide them. After months mine vanished today. I
checked and there is no virus present. Does anyone know
how to repair this, without system restore [ problems for
Norton ] or a complete re-install of XP???

Hi!
Try this:-
Hide or Show Inactive Icons in the Notification Area
(Line 53)

Go back to the [Customize Notifications] dialog box. Looking at the array
of icons in the notification area, can you [Always hide] the leftmost icon?
If that icon needs to be always on show, then use your ingenuity to arrange
the icons so that the first can be put in the [Always hide] category. For
me, this is the Windows Messenger icon, for I don't use the utility at all.
Once that is done, [Apply] and exit. Sometimes there is a delay of a couple
of minutes before the *chevron* makes its reassuring reappearance. At other
times, a restart (of the OS) shortens the wait. But usually the change is
immediate.
