Steve,

The best way to secure a computer (make it invisible) is to install and
configure a software firewall on it. The XP ICF should work for this purpose.

And Steve, please don't contribute to the spread and success of email address
mining viruses. Learn to munge your email address properly, to keep yourself a
bit safer when posting to open forums. Protect yourself and the rest of the
internet - read this article.

Steve,

Each open port is owned and operated by the software that opens it. Any
registry entries would be specific to the owning software.

I wouldn't bet on there not being some registry entries. But I don't know what
they would be either. They will certainly be unique to each software package,
if they exist.

Give PortBlocker a try, and let us know if it works for you. Or ZoneAlarm.
They're free, so you have nothing to lose but time.
