Hidden, System Files attributes... maybe taking ownership problems

I have files that are somehow becoming marked as hidden, system files. I
have no idea how it happened other than the second time it happened I had
just taken ownership of a set of folders. There is no way that I know of
that I can unmark these as hidden, system files/folders.

Anyone have any thoughts? It is very weird and very troubling.

From a CMD.EXE window
attrib -h -s "c:\folder\filename"
