Hidden NIC card ?????

T

Tal Fucus

Hi all,
I try to set a static IP for the NIC card, and I get a message:

"The IP address XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX you have entered for this network adapter is
already assigned to another adapter
'The Adapter X, 'The Adapter X' is hidden from the network connections
folder because it is not physicaly in the computer......"

It's the same card I currently have, in the same exact name in the device
drivers.
I think it because I installed a new driver for the card (Never replaced it
thogh).

How can I remove any existance of the old settings, so I won't get this
message ?

Thans,
Tal

This is no help :-(
I don't have the Unplug/Uninstall option :-/

as they say :" bummer"

I know I had a similar problem that never did get resolved properly
but as I recall...when I tried to reassign the numbers, though I was given a
warning...
I was allowed to do so.

Although I did not try it...on another thread somewhere...someone suggested
removing the
unused card from the registry.

I can assign an IP address, even though it conflict, but I want to get rid
of this annoying message

BUT HOW ?

Been there, done that, still irritated at Microsoft about it.

You probably created a second instance of the NIC in your system
when you installed new drivers. There are lots of ways to get into the
situation you find yourself in, but that would be my guess based
on your description.

Try this procedure:

Open a command window (START -> RUN, type CMD, OK)
From the command prompt issue the commands:

set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1
start devmgmt.msc

Note that the lines *must* be issued in this order, and from within the
same command window. The Device Manager will be displayed.

From the menu bar, select VIEW -> SHOW HIDDEN DEVICES

Expand the Network Adapters entry. Your old NIC entry should be
displayed, and from here you can delete it.

Joe,

Thanks !!!!
Thats made the trick.
How come I didn't see all these hidden devices only after selecting the
"show hidden devices" option ?
I found many more devices this way ? Do they have any influance on system
performance ?

Damifino. Ask the programmers at Microsoft why they made it so difficult
to find the orphaned device entries.

My stock answer: "it depends". There are lots of hidden interfaces
that are displayed only with "show hidden devices" enabled; there's
no way to give a generic answer to this. I've looked over the list
in several systems but never saw any reason to try to tinker with
the items.
