Hidden folders remain hidden

I am trying to change a user’s folder properties to see hidden files on a
machine running XP SP2.

When I go to My computer > Tools > Folder Options > View under the “Hidden
files and folders section, both selections are checked. If I uncheck the ‘Do
not show hidden files and folders’ selection and leave the ‘Show hidden files
and folders’ selection checked, and OK out of Folder Options, hidden folders
remain hidden. When I go back and check, both selections under the ‘Hidden
files and folders’ section are checked again.

Any pointers are appreciated.

There have been a few posts about this lately. What is the malware/virus
status of the machine? If you think it is clean, what programs (and
versions) did you use to determine this?
