Hibernation mode in Windows XP home

I was handed a Compaq laptop that has Windows XP Home installed and is
current to SP3. The computer has been functioning fine but today the owner,
an elderly relative, told me pressed a couple of keys that put it into the
hibernation mode. He does not remember what keys he hit and now, when he
restarts the computer the screen is blank and neither the keyboard or the
touch pad responds. I turned it on and the hard drive spins up and all seems
fine but I get the same issues he reported.

Any ideas?

Yes. Find a Windows XP group for your question. You'll have much better
luck.

As you appear to be using a web interface, start here to find an appropriate
group:

http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx

Click the + beside your language. then scroll down to Windows. In Windows,
open the Windows XP category, then find a group there to
post in.
